Hiring a van can be a great option when you need to move large items or a lot of items. However, before you can hit the road, there are a few things you need to know about what you need to hire a van. Here’s a guide on what you need to bring with you and what driving licence you need for what size/weight of van.

Identification

To hire a van, you will need to provide identification to prove your identity and your address. You will need to bring your driving licence and a recent utility bill or bank statement that confirms your address.

A valid driving licence

When it comes to driving licences, there are different categories that determine what type of van you can drive. If you passed your driving test before 1 January 1997, you are likely to have “grandfather rights”, which means you can drive any van that weighs up to 7.5 tonnes. If you passed your driving test after 1 January 1997, your licence will show different categories that determine what type of van you can drive.

  • Category B

A Category B driving licence allows you to drive a van that weighs up to 3,500kg and can carry up to 8 passengers. This is the most common driving licence for van drivers and covers the majority of commercial vans that you can hire.

  • Category C1

A Category C1 driving licence allows you to drive a van that weighs between 3,500kg and 7,500kg, but you cannot carry passengers for hire or reward. This licence is useful if you need to move larger items, such as furniture or equipment, but do not need to transport people.

  • Category C

A Category C driving licence allows you to drive a van that weighs over 7,500kg. This licence is suitable for larger vans and lorries that are used for commercial purposes. If you need to hire a van of this size, you will need to make sure that you have the right driving licence.
