What vehicle can I drive?

With your full UK/EU driving licence, you will be able to drive up to a 3.5-ton vehicle. This includes all the vehicles in our fleet, including our Luton vans. This will give you the freedom you need when you’re hiring a vehicle.

What do I need to hire a vehicle?

The process of hiring a van is easy. You must provide the following documentation:

  • A full UK/EU driving licence, that you’ve had for at least 12 months
  • A licence check code, that you can get from the government website
  • A recent proof of address
  • The credit or debit card that you used to reserve your van

How old do I have to be?

For our hire services, we have a minimum age of 25. For our minibus hire, the maximum age we will hire to is 65, and our light vans and commercial vans will have a maximum age of 70.

What happens if I’m over 71?

If you’re over the age of 71, we will probably still be able to hire you a vehicle, but this will be subject to an insurance check. So that you can avoid disappointment, we recommend you calling us well in advance so that we can help you where we can.

What if I have points on my licence?

Our insurance will allow you to hire a van with up to 6 points, dependent on the conviction codes applied to your licence. If you’d like more clarification on this, calling us in advance is advisable.

What does the price include?

The price that you will be quoted with includes VAT. They also include your nationwide breakdown cover and insurance. We make a point never to include hidden extras – we will always be up front with our customers.

Is there a deposit and how much would it be?

We ask for a deposit of £100, and this is a pre-authorised, refundable deposit. This amount will be payable at either our Tottenham or Enfield branch upon the collection of your vehicle, using the card you used to book your van hire.

When do I get my deposit back?

The deposits we ask for are pre-authorised. This means that our CVS team doesn’t take any money from your account, but we are given authorisation by the customer to take it if we are required. This could be under the circumstances of low fuel, lateness, or damage. In the event that there aren’t any issues, your deposit will be released back to you. £100 will still need to be in the account for a successful pre-authorisation. The deposit will usually clear between 7 and 10 days on Visa cards, and up to 30 days on a MasterCard.

How much is the insurance excess?

Our vehicles up to 3,500 kg GVW are comprehensively insured. They do have an insurance excess of £1,000. Additional named drivers can be added free of charge, given that their driving licence is shown to us. You will be responsible for any damage or losses sustained to the van, and will be liable to pay the insurance excess if this happens. Your excess can be halved to £500 for a charge of £10 per day, if you select this option.

How do I pay?

We take all major credit and debit cards. This includes Visa, Visa Electron, MasterCard, Switch, Solo, and more.

What is your cancellation policy?

Any cancellations made with more than 48 hours’ notice will be subject to a 25% handling charge during the refund. Cancellations made with less than 48 hours’ notice will be subject to a 50% cancellation fee of the refund, and bookings that aren’t collected with no notice, are entirely non-refundable.

What happens if I get a parking ticket or a speeding fine?

In the event that you receive a parking or speeding fine, your payment card will be debited the cost of our administration charge to transfer the liability into your name. Your details will be forwarded to the relevant authority, and communication will then be direct between you and the authority. Once the fine is in your name, you will be able to pay or appeal the fine.

What do I do if my van breaks down?

It’s unlikely that your CVS Van Hire vehicle will break down but, in the event that this does happen, all our vans come with full nationwide breakdown coverage.

What happens if I have to pay Congestion Charge?

If your journey means that you will have to pay a Congestion Charge, we will happily add it onto your hire charge on your behalf. Just let us know that you would like to select this option.

Can I hire a van to drive to Ireland and Europe?

Vehicle hire to Ireland and Europe is available at the discretion of CVS Van Hire and will likely incur more costs for Green Card Insurance and European 5* AA Cover. In cases such as these, we would recommend booking in advance by at least 24 hours. We will be able to provide you with the correct equipment needed for European driving laws and regulations.

What do I do if I am late returning the vehicle?

If you know you’re going to be late returning your vehicle, it’s important to let us know in advance. We can then let you know if there will be additional charges, and what to do to return the van out of business hours.

What happens if I return early, do I get a refund?

Any early return refunds will be decided on a case-by-case basis, and will be at the discretion of CVS Van Hire’s management team.

What do I do when I return the vehicle?

Returning the vehicle to us is an easy process. All you have to do is drive the van back to our depot (either in Tottenham or Enfield), where someone will check the vehicle with you. You can also use our 24-hour drop off service.

How about the fuel?

In general, we recommend that you return the vehicle to us with the same amount of fuel that you received it with – any fuel we dispense with will be charged for. Any additional fuel can’t be refunded. When filling up the vehicle, remember that all our vans are diesel.

Can I return the vehicle out of hours?

We operate a 24-hour drop off service, meaning you can drop off your van at any time of the day or night, without an extra charge. This ensures you don’t have to rush your journey. We have an overnight drop box where you can safely leave the keys, and we will direct you where to leave the vehicle at the time of your collection. However, you must return the van within your paid period, otherwise charges may apply. The responsibility for the vehicle lies with you until the next working day.

Can I transport food in my rental van?

We offer modern refrigerated vans. You can set the temperature as low as 0℃ keeping food and drink cold and safe to cook and consume. Just ask when you get in touch, and we’d be happy to arrange a refrigerated van for you. Please note that fish and or seafood are not permitted in any of our vehicles.

Do you supply any packaging supplies and accessories?

We are able to supply packaging and accessories that you can utilise during your van hire. This includes features such as racking for Luton vans and refrigerated vans.
