Finally… warmer weather is breaking through after what seems like a winter that lasted a lifetime. The festival season will soon be upon us – a tense time going to battle over tickets for the hottest gigs up and down the country, and after all that hard work – frantically dialling and redialling and holding for what seems like hours, you’re in. Next stop? Van hire – piling in on-mass with your mates (let’s face it, a convoy of multiple cars with minimal leg space and even smaller boot space for those suitcases is so 2014). In preparation for the holy season for the gig goer, here we’ve put together a list of five festivals that you’ll need a van for.
1. Glastonbury, Glastonbury – 21 Jun 2017 – 25 Jun 2017
Glastonbury is the most in-demand date during festival season – and it’s also amongst the lengthiest of gig weekends renowned for rain, mud and grime monsters – for which you’ll need to take plenty of kit (and for that, you’ll need a rather spacious van).
2. Isle of Wight Festival, Isle of Wight – 8-11 June 2017
Planning on trekking all the way to the Isle of Wight for a gig that’s been going strong for the last 50 years? Then forget flying (and more to the point, don’t even try to fit in your many festival essentials into a bag that comes in under the demanding weight limit). Grab your mates, a mini-bus and a ferry and hot foot it across The Solent for a weekend to remember.
3. Creamfields, Daresbury – 24-27 August
Perhaps you can get away with looking like a swamp monster for Glastonbury, however Creamfields, in all of its superstar, shiny image glory, demands plenty of outfit changes fit for the festival catwalk. We’d suggest that a transit for two could be helpful here.
4. Primavera Sound, Barcelona, Spain – 31 May – 4 June 2017
Another once-in-a-lifetime gig is Primavera Sound in Barcelona, Spain, which presents a buzzing alternative scene, making this a real favourite for indie lovers and avid fans of fresh, ambitious music. Given the length of this gig, and the location, we’d say that your best bet here is a van and a ferry hop over to Portugal – make it a real summer road trip! The drive from Portugal takes around 11 hours – for which an overnight pit stop or two may be called for.
5. Download Festival, Derby – 9-11 June 2017
Our final addition to this year’s festival is Download – the granddaddy of gigs for rock and heavy metal festivals and a favourite amongst wannabe groupies. If you’re planning on rocking your stuff here, forget about attempting to jump on anyone’s tour bus, with a tour bus of your own.
